Butterfly Weed
Asclepias tuberosa

Price: $24.99

Availability: IN STOCK

A "must have" for every butterfly garden this coarse-textured, vase-shaped perennial personifies high summer with its bright orange flower heads, attracting butterflies and bees throughout mid summer. The flower clusters are made up of 1/4 in. across individual flowers, which grab onto the legs of visiting butterflies. As the butterfly struggles to pull free, it dusts itself with pollen. Slow growing and long-lived, sturdy, foliage clumps combine well with finer textured, mounded plants such as catmint, blue oat grass, fountain grass, or thread leaf coreopsis. For contrast, plant it with gray-leaved globe thistle or ornamental mullein. Grows best in full sun in sandy soil, but will tolerate clay soil. Deadheading promotes rebloom several weeks later. Cut back in late fall. They are slow to emerge in spring; mark their spot to avoid damage. Needs heat to prosper and bloom well; not suited to cool summer climates or poor drainage in winter.
