One of the easiest plants to grow, Ferns can found on the highest mountains, in the driest deserts, on wall tops, in sun or shade, practically anywhere. And, as they need very little maintenance, they are a perfect choice for the home landscape. The larger woodland types will be happy to live and increase in size slowly, won't outgrow their space for many years/decades, with no care at all. Old dead fronds protect the roots and soil beneath so, unless you are the "tidy gardener" there is no reason to remove them. Ferns do enjoy a mulch now & then, but they do not need lots of fertilizer nor do they usually need dividing.
