1 of the most popular tropical houseplants, this boldly large fern has bright green fronds that can easily grow up to 3-4 ft. . long, dwarfing other common fern varieties. The broad fronds have gently toothed leaves atop very thin, reddish haired stems, and the fronds spring out from the main core of the plant to offer a bold, jazzy look. Native to Florida, the Macho fern grows well both indoors and outdoors where the plant is commonly found in large outdoor pots on the dappled shade patio. Thrives in warm, shady areas with high humidity and regular rainfall. Requires consistently moist yet well draining soil that is organically rich and slightly acidic, it will not grow in heavy nor waterlogged soil. Grow outdoors year round only in USDA Zones 9-11, in all other Zones, it is best to grow as an indoor houseplant. Protect from direct sunlight as the hot sunrays can burn the foliage. Considered a USA threatened species because of the rapid loss of its natural habitat. As a houseplant, the Macho fern is an excellent choice to purify the air, by removing pollutants and toxic chemicals.
