A broadleaf evergreen herbaceous perennial shrub with a dense rounded form, belonging to the Mint family and often grown as a houseplant especially in cold climates. Profusions of blooms appear when day length shortens in autumn and continuing into spring. The shiny dark green leaves are ornamental and have purple undersides. Requires a partially shaded site and moist well draining soil that is high in organic matter. Grows 12-24 in. tall and wide. Outdoor hardy only in the warmest growing zones 10-11, in all other areas, grow as a houseplant kept indoors most of the year. Perfect to brighten indoor spaces, shaded patios, or garden beds in warm tropical regions.
